Often, when I am asked to describe my music, there are two concepts which come to the fore: that of "Spiritual Music," and that of "Ambient Music." A lot of the music that has influenced can be seen to fit in one of these two categories, and almost everything I have written in the last four years involves some combination of the two. I've thought a lot about what else I could say here, but honestly, for the moment, I think I'll just list some music I like. I should also mention, perhaps, that I do throat singing in addition to the classical music I study in my voice lessons. I'm sure this influences what I write. Some contemporary composers I like: Claude Vivier, Bent Sorensen, Louis Andriessen, LaMonte Young, Steve Reich, John Adams, Per Norgard, Salvatore Sciarrino, Gerard Grisey, Horatiu Radulescu, Phil Kline, Michael Gordon, Lisa Bielawa, John Cage, Iannis Xenakis, Arvo Part, Henryk Gorecki, Giya Kancheli, and Giacinto Scelsi. My favorite older classical composers: Mozart, Stravinsky, Josquin, Bach, Schubert, Machaut, Ockeghem, Perotin, Shostakovich, and Chopin. Some "non-classical" Western musicians I like: Simon Posford (of Hallucinogen, Shpongle, etc.), David Sylvian, Kruder & Dorfmeister, Brian Eno, The KLF, The Future Sound of London, Kansas, The Doors, Belle & Sebastian, Pole, The Scientist, and Squarepusher. Some non-Western musics that I like: Balinese gamelan, Javanese gamelan from Sunda and Banyuwangi counties, Qawwali music, Tibetan sacred music, Mongolian and Tuvvan throat singing, Georgian folk songs, Peruvian icaros, and Carnatic music. |
